The Most Common Stressors Affecting Singles (And Steps to Ease Them) Part 1

At Heart of Wonder Events, we see you! Being single can be full of freedom, possibility and growth.

But it can also come with its own quiet, constant stress. If you’re single and often feel tense, tired or “behind,” you’re not alone.

In working with singles, I see the same patterns come up again and again. Below are 3 of the most common stressors affecting singles today – and gentle ways to ease them. Look for Part 2

1. Feeling “Behind” in Life

Many singles feel like everyone else is moving forward – getting married, having kids, buying homes – while they’re stuck in place. Social media makes this worse, because we see only the highlights of other people’s lives.

Why it’s stressful

  • You compare your timeline to others.

  • You question your worth and your choices.

  • You feel pressure to “catch up,” even when you’re actually doing fine.

Ways to ease this stress

  • Name your own values. What truly matters to you right now – growth, travel, creativity, healing, career, friendship? Let that be your compass, not someone else’s timeline.

  • Limit comparison triggers. Take breaks from social media or unfollow accounts that leave you feeling small.

  • Celebrate your current season. Make a short list of what being single allows you to do right now (time, freedom, space to heal, room to explore). The Bible values  people who are single and many of the spiritual greats have been single.

2. Dating Fatigue and Rejection

Dating apps, mixed signals, ghosting and endless small talk can be exhausting. Even when you try to stay positive, repeated disappointments can wear down your nervous system.

Why it’s stressful

  • Your brain reads rejection as a threat to belonging and safety.

  • You may start to believe “there’s something wrong with me.”

  • The constant on/off of hope and disappointment is draining.

Ways to ease this stress

  • Take intentional breaks. It’s okay to pause dating apps for a week or a month to reset your energy.

  • Separate your worth from the outcome. A match, a message or a date is information – not a verdict on your value. Remember, you are always valued by God and are His valued family.

  • Choose nourishing dates. Pick activities that feel good even if the connection isn’t perfect (a walk, a gallery, a cozy café) so your time still feels meaningful.

3. Financial Pressure on One Income

Living on a single income can be stressful, especially with rising costs of housing, food and energy. There’s no partner to share bills with, and that can feel scary.

Why it’s stressful

  • Money worries trigger survival fears.

  • You may feel you “should” be further ahead financially.

  • You might avoid looking at your finances because it feels overwhelming.

Ways to ease this stress

  • Get clear, not perfect. Start with a simple overview: what comes in, what goes out, and what you owe. Clarity itself reduces anxiety.

  • Create one small safety step. This could be a tiny emergency fund, a savings jar, or paying down one small debt. Small wins calm the nervous system.

  • Ask for support. A trusted friend, a financial coach, or a workshop can help you feel less alone with money decisions.

Moving From Stress to Wonder

If you recognize yourself in any of these stressors, take a breath. Nothing about your situation makes you broken or behind. You are a human being living through a demanding, fast-paced world – and your nervous system is simply asking for more care.

Here are some small steps you can try today. Start with one or two:

  • Choose one stressor from this list and write about how it shows up in your life.

  • Find the Biblical promises that relate to what stresses you the most. Read that promise every day.

  • Pick one tiny, kind action you can take this week to support yourself.

  • Put time aside to rest in God’s presence, in His loving care.

  • Reach out to someone you trust and share one honest sentence about how you’re really doing.

At Heart of Wonder Events, our workshops are designed to give you space to exhale, reconnect with God and remember that you don’t have to carry everything alone.

God wants you to know him and be known to others.
